Apr 10, 2025 (newstodate): The pattern of air passenger traffic to and from Greenland has predictably changed with the opening of the country's new Nuuk Airport.
As planned, Nuuk Airport opened for traffic on November 28, 2024, relocating the North Atlantic traffic from Air Greenland's earlier hub at Kangerlussuaq Airport to Nuuk Airport.
In January-February 2025, the volumes of passenger through Kangerlussuaq dipped to a mere 327 passengers against 7,668 in the same months in 2024.
On the other hand, the volumes of passenger through Nuuk Airport reached 8,536 passengers on Air Greenland's traffic between Greenland and Denmark.
With all initial operational restrictions lifted, Nuuk Airport will now look forward to Greenland's first-ever direct nonstop flights from the USA as United Airlines launches flights between New York Newark Airport and Nuuk with a program operating from June 14 till September 24, 2025, comprising a total of 30 operations during the period.
SAS has also announced the return of seasonal flights between Copenhagen and Nuuk Airport starting from June 27, 2025, offering three weekly rotations, marking its return to Greenland after 17 years of absence.
Given the current global attention - wanted or unwanted - to Greenland, Nuuk Airport will surely attract new international airlines from this summer's schedule.
