Mar 10, 2025 (newstodate): Uruguay pins high hopes on the newly announced cooperation with Latvia's airBaltic.
airBaltic has thus inked a strategic cooperation with the new national carrier in Uruguay, SUA Lineas Aereas, allocating up to five Airbus A220-300 aircraft on a wet-lease contract with operations starting from October 2025.
Besides the wet-lease deal, airBaltic will also support SUA in areas including operational set-up, pilot training, know-how sharing, IT and automation.
Uruguay has been without a national airline since the state-owned carrier PLUNA exited the market in 2012.
With a small population totaling only 3.5 mio, Uruguay hopes for Montevideo to become a tourism hub for South American nations, with flights to northeastern Brazil, Argentina’s Patagonia, Peru, and Colombia that will all be within reach of the Airbus A220-300 aircraft.
