Mar 01, 2024 (newstodate): Russia has pinned large hopes on the introduction of an all-new commercial aircraft to compete with western aircraft like the Airbus A321neo and Boeing 737 MAX 9.
The entry into service of the new aircraft has so far been scheduled for 2024 - but has now been pushed back by at least two years.
This is a result from the sanctions imposed on Russia after the war on Ukraine, delaying the flight test program with indigenous systems and materials.
The aircraft was designed to be powered by Pratt & Whitney engines, but the manufacturer has instead been forced to develop PD-14 power plants, and other issues concern the use of composite structures still only under development.
Heeding the call by the Russian president for Russia to turn from Western to Russian aircraft, the Aeroflot Group has dutifully ordered 260 Irkut MC-21 aircraft.
