Mar 07, 2024 (newstodate): Lithuanian Airports is seeing fresh results from the implementation of a risk-sharing partnership model to enhance air connectivity.
Developed by Lithuania's Ministry of Transport and Communications and consultants, the model was first implemented to secure the continued operation of the route connecting Vilnius and London City Airport.
In 2023, a tender called for airlines to apply for operating the route with a deadline by June 9, 2023 - and following negotiations between the Ministry of Transport and Communications, Lithuanian Airports and airlines, Lithuanian Airports landed an investment agreement with LOT Polish Airlines that was already operating the route under the earlier agreement expiring by September 30, 2023.
Now the same model has lured the Latvian carrier airBaltic to launch flights between Vilnius and Hamburg as well as between Vilnius and Lisbon, with twice-weekly services starting from May 2024.
This summer, airBaltic now plans to add a total of four new routes from Lithuania – three from Vilnius to Krakow, Hamburg, and Lisbon, and one from Palanga to Amsterdam.
In 2024, the airline will thus connect Lithuania with 18 destinations, allocating two Airbus A220-300 aircraft to the base at Vilnius Airport
