Mar 14, 2024 (newstodate): Defying harsh western sanctions, Iran seemingly still manages to expand its fleet of western-built aircraft.
On February 29, 2024, two Airbus A320-600 aircraft left Lithuania's Siauliai Airport after some two years of storage, ostensibly heading for Sri Lanka and the Philippines, respectively.
However, after some eight hours in the air, the two aircraft closed transponders and changed course in Iranian airspace, with one eventually landing at Chabahar Airport in the south and later continuing to Kabul, Afghanistan, while the other aircraft nestled in Tehran Airport.
While parked at Sialuliai Airport, the two aircraft were owned by Macka Invest Company in Gambia - today their ownership remains veiled.
