Mar 15, 2024 (newstodate): Vagar Airport on the Faroe Islands has yet to shine when it comes to air cargo volumes.
In 2023, the airport handled only 462 tonnes of cargo, down 42.9 percent, y-o-y, and 189 tonnes of mail, down more modestly by 1.1 percent in 2023,l with only one month, July, to show a positive growth by 13.8 percent, y-o-y, which however did little to reverse the negative trend through the year.
Also, this year has seen a modest start, with only 31.4 tonnes of cargo handled.
All this is now to change with the long-awaited launch by March 5, 2024, of FarCargo's Transatlantic cargo operations that will see the second rotation today from Vagar Airport to New York via Keflavik on Iceland for refueling.
Set up and owned by the leading seafood exporter in the Faroe Islands, Bakkafrost, FarCargo's prime task is the transportation of the company's seafood into the US markets with Newark Int'l Airport as its US gateway.
FarCargo has selected Denmark's Billund Airport as its Europe base and appointed NordicGSA as its GSA to sell the home bound cargo capacity on behalf of FarCargo.
Purchased from AirSale, FarCargo's Boeing 757-200F is placed on the AOC of FarCargo's partner, West Atlantic Sweden.
