Mar 18, 2024 (newstodate): As one of only three airport worldwide, Denmark's Billund Airport has been approved to operate REST, Remote Explosive Scent Tracing, presented to forwarders and other stakeholders at an event at the airport today.
The method, currently approved for use only at Amsterdam Schiphol and Paris CDG, is developed to allow for screening of large volumes of individual cargo shipments on a truck simultaneously; an employee will take a sample of air from closed units like trailers, containers or ULDs, and a specially trained sniffer dog will then check the sample for possible explosives.
The entire test process takes only 10-12 minutes, and the truck driver can then proceed directly to the ramp for unloading without waiting for the test results.
REST thus eliminates the need for cargo to be unloaded for individual inspection and reloaded again, saving time and minimizing the risk of damage to shipments.
The cargo handling department at Billund Airport is now developing a system to allow forwarders to pre-enter the REST service in connection with their cargo bookings.
