Mar 19, 2024 (newstodate): The opening of new international airports in Greenland will augur new potentials for Greenland's seafood exports.
Already now, Air Greenland has successfully tested the viability of sending fresh live seafood from Nuuk via the current transatlantic hub at Kangerlussuaq to Denmark.
The transport of the first large shipment of 500 kg live snow crabs from Nuuk to Copenhagen took place on March 14, 2024, and after a brief chilling at Copenhagen Airport the crabs were trucked into the seafood auction at Hanstholm, arriving in good shape.
-We have been anxious to see if the crabs would make the trip. But upon arrival at Hansholm there were only 13 dead crabs out of 500 kg, which is beyond all expectations, says Soren Stovhase Norso, Air Greenland Cargo Sales Manager.
With the opening of Nuuk Airport on November 28, 2024, seafood exporters in the region can ship exports directly to Copenhagen Airport, shortening the total transport time, streamlining the air logistics and ensuring longer shelf life for the seafood products.
The ambition is that in the future Air Greenland, in collaboration with more suppliers, will ship larger quantities of fresh seafood to other auction houses and directly to restaurants around the world.
