Feb 15, 2024 (newstodate): Opened in 1936, the future of the Swedish airport at Bromma, near Stockholm's city center, has been a hot political issue for years, or even decades.
The existing contract between Swedavia and Stockholm City is due to expire in 2038, and politicians have differed on whether the airport should be shut down even prior to the expiry date.
Now the debate has gained further momentum as the majority in Stockholm's City Council has decided to formally terminate the lease contract with the Swedish state, spelling the end of operations from 2038, or even earlier.
In its place, the City Council will start planning for turning the site into an urban area with 16,000 apartments, while the air traffic will move to Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
After the world war, the predecessors of SAS operated European flights at Bromma Airport; but the jet age called for longer runways and a more extensive airport infrastructure, leading to the construction of Stockholm Arlanda Airport, officially opened in 1962, and the move of international air traffic away from Bromma Airport.
Despite the dwindling importance of Stockholm Bromma Airport, it still serves airlines including BRA, Finnair and Nyxair operating turboprop aircraft. while Brussels Airlines moved its flight from Bromma to Stockholm Airport from October 29, 2023, after years of service since 2004.
