Feb 20, 2024 (newstodate): In 2023, Russia managed to negotiate the purchase of no less than 165 western-built aircraft grounded in the country as the Western sanctions were implemented.
According to Russian media, this corresponds to over one-third of all the around 400 aircraft on foreign registration and owned by western aircraft lessors.
Aeroflot has thus managed to take over 93 aircraft, while S7 Airlines has taken over 45 aircraft and Ural Airlines another 19 aircraft.
Aurora took over eight Airbus A319 aircraft, while iFly has so far not secured state financing for its application to take over three aircraft.
The buyout of western-built aircraft is required to remove their foreign registration so that their western lessors do not arrest the aircraft operating on routes outside Russia.
Ownership rights to the purchased aircraft are first transferred to the state insurance company NSK, which owns the leasing company NLK-Finance that in turn places the aircraft on lease contracts with Russian airlines.
