Feb 19, 2024 (newstodate): Barred from flights through Russian airspace since 2022, Finnair has turned around its strategy.
And it seems to work: in 2023, Finnair generated a positive operating profit, compared to steep losses in the previous year.
The focus is now on increasing frequencies on a number of European and Asian routes, rather than opening up new routes, while flights to China will remain limited as the airline cannot compete with Chinese carriers that are free to operate over Russia.
Instead, flights to Japan will grow with services to Osaka Kansai International Airport to up from three to five weekly rotations; flights to Tokyo Narita International Airport will increase from four to six weekly rotations in addition to the currently daily service to Tokyo Haneda International Airport.
As earlier reported, Finnair is also returning services to Nagoya from May 30, 2024, with two weekly rotations.
China will remain on the route map, albeit with only two weekly rotations between Helsinki and Shanghai; in summer 2019, Finnair was operating 38 weekly flights from Helsinki to six destinations in China - Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing, Xian, Nanjing, Guangzhou, and to Hong Kong.
