Feb 09, 2024 (newstodate): According to initial plans, Riga Airport would see the opening of the region's largest air cargo terminal by early 2024.
This is, however, not to be:
-We can indeed confirm that the project has been delayed, we cannot, however, disclose a revised plan for the opening just yet, says a spokesperson from airBaltic that is driving the project on newstodate's inquiry.
According to the spokesperson, a press release on the progress of the project will be out next week.
Located next to the airport’s dedicated cargo handling apron that launched operations by October 2020 and with 6,000 m2 floor space, the new cargo terminal will be the largest dedicated air cargo handling facility in the Baltics, designed for handling of up to 30,000 tonnes of cargo annually and operated by airBaltic's cargo handling subsidiary, Baltic Cargo Center.
The new air cargo terminal will be handling airBaltic's own and growing operations as well as all-cargo and freighter operators, and will especially be targeting the expected steep growth in e-trade shipments as well as mail volumes.
Plans are also to seek CEIV Pharma certification after completion of the pertinent infrastructure, including cooling and temperature-controlled areas.
In April 2021, airBaltic emerged as the winner of a tender opened in November 2020 for the area dedicated by Riga Airport to the construction of an air cargo service and logistics center, and the opportunity to acquire building rights for 30 years to a plot of land in an area of 1.5 hectares in the northern part of the Airport territory as part of the RIX Cargo City.
After preliminary design work and tendering of the individual contracts, construction works started in 2022.
