Jan 10, 2024 (newstodate): With the launch of FarCargo remaining a distant dream, expectations for a rise in cargo at the Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport did not materialize in 2023.
The airport handled only 462 tonnes of cargo, down 42.9 percent, y-o-y, and 189 tonnes of mail, down more modestly by 1.1 percent in 2023.
Actually, July 2023 was the only month in 2023 to show a positive growth by 13.8 percent, y-o-y, which however did little to reverse the negative trend through the year.
Dampening hopes for a reversal of the negative trend were the aborted plans for launch of the Faroese cargo carrier FarCargo, repeatedly postponed for a wealth of reasons since the first deadline for the FarCargo seafood freighter to start operating from late October/early November 2022 was overshot.
Purchased from AirSale, FarCargo's Boeing 757-200F placed on the AOC of FarCargo's partner, West Atlantic Sweden, left the paint shop in FarCargo's livery at Taikoo Xiamen Aircraft Engineering Co. Ltd on June 10, 2023, awaiting final delivery.
According to insider information, the process has been running behind schedule on the seller's side, causing delays to the official take-over.
-Operations will start with test flights and possibly some intra-European cargo flights. And only thereafter FarCargo will launch regular flights on the planned route Vagar-Keflavik-New York Newark-Billund-Vagar, Birgir Nielsen, FarCargo CEO, earlier told newstodate.
Currently, newstodate has been unable to reach FarCargo for an update and a new timeframe for start of operations.
FarCargo is part of the Bakkafrost Group, the country's leading exporter of fresh salmon to the US market.
