Jan 08, 2024 (newstodate): Sarajevo, capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is keen to develop its air connectivity, now pinning high hopes on the return of connections to Copenhagen, Stockholm and Oslo already from this summer.
In 2023, Sarajevo Airport announced a tender for subsidizing new routes, notably eyeing flights to Scandinavia - and the outcome of the tender closed shortly before Christmas will be announced shortly.
-The government of the Sarajevo Canton will directly assist in the launch of new routes that will link Sarajevo with points in Europe. These types of subsidies are already widely used across cities in the European Union, but also within our region, the country's PM says in local media.
Both Norwegian and SAS have aired interest in opening flights on routes to Sarajevo and are expected to be among the preferred bidders.
On May 20, 2021, Wizz Air opened a base at Sarajevo with one Airbus A320 aircraft, allowing the carrier to launch flights to nine destinations, including Copenhagen from May 22, 2021.
The base was, however, closed down again already by the end of October 2022, and the flights to Copenhagen were subsequently cancelled as well.
Over time, many efforts have been made to secure traffic on the route between Sarajevo and Copenhagen, including airlines like SAS that last operated the route during the S-18 schedule only, and Norwegian with flights during the S-19 schedule to Sarajevo from four airports in Scandinavia - Copenhagen, Stockholm Arlanda, Gothenburg and Oslo.
During the early 2000s, SAS' low-cost adventure Snowflake operated on the route for one season only; in 2004 a new Bosnian airline, Arnoro planned to start operations from June 11 from Sarajevo via Banjaluka to Copenhagen, Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Oslo; in 2009, BH Airlines planned to open flights from Sarajevo to Copenhagen, Denmark, offering two weekly rotations, adding flights from May 13, 2009, to Gothenburg, Sweden.
