Jan 08, 2024 (newstodate): Icelandair sees it future with Airbus after signing an MoU in April 2023 for the purchase of 13 Airbus A321XLR aircraft, with purchase rights for another 12 aircraft.
Deliveries are slated to commence in 2029, but already in May 2023 Icelandair revealed plans for advancing the introduction of the Airbus A321XLR by leasing four aircraft of the type from SMBC as an interim solution, with the first delivery in 2024.
Now, Icelandair has announced a follow-up lease agreement with SMBC for a fifth Airbus A321XLR to be delivered in Q1, 2026.
-We are very pleased to announce the lease of one more aircraft from our long-term partner SMBC Aviation Limited. We have already started entry into service for these efficient aircraft that will replace our Boeing 757, says Bogi Nils Bogason, Icelandair president and CEO.
The new long-range aircraft will replace the airline's 17 aging Boeing 757 aircraft and significantly widen the reach of the carrier from its hub at Keflavik Airport.
