Jan 24, 2024 (newstodate): Latvia's Riga Airport ended 2023 with a drop in cargo by nine percent, y-o-y.
A total of 19,160 tonnes of cargo was handled at the airport in 2023 – 30 percent less than in pre-Covid 2019, while roughly on a par with volumes in 2020.
The airport is strongly affected by the closure of the Russian airspace that caused the stream of e-trade shipments from China to subside.
-In 2023, air cargo witnessed a significant impact of geopolitical processes that have changed cargo logistics routes, says Ilze Salna, Riga Airport Communication Project Manager in a comment to the statistics.
-Much of the cargo intended for our region, which was previously delivered by air, is now delivered by land from Central Europe, and this has reduced the volume of air cargo handled.
