Jan 23, 2024 (newstodate): The opening of Greenland's coming new transatlantic airport at Ilulissat is expected to generate new tourism flows into the country.
One party to benefit from the new opportunities is Disko Bay Seagate, a subsidiary of Disko Line, focusing on maritime tourism in the Greenlandic waters and expecting to be handling some 25,000 passengers annually.
The company has now obtained green lights for its project to build a new harbor close to and connected by a new road to Ilulissat Airport.
The coming new harbor facilities will serve the company's own fleet as well as the airport owner Kalaallit Airports and the Ilulissat commune that is also home to significant seafood industries.
Plans are to see the opening of the new harbor by Q1/2025, roughly coinciding with the commissioning of the new airport equipped with a 2,200m runway allowing for traffic by larger aircraft.
