Jan 05, 2024 (newstodate): Work on Greenland's coming three new airports is progressing - but with some adjustments and turbulence.
It recently emerged that while the opening date for the new airport serving the capital Nuuk set for November 28, 2024, still holds, the opening of the new airport to serve Qaqortoq, in southernmost Greenland, will be delayed till spring 2026 against earlier autumn 2025.
It is not the first time schedules for Qaqortoq Airport have been changed; originally, plans were to see the commissioning by the end of 2023; plans were then adjusted to autumn 2024 - which also did not hold
So far, the opening of the third airport at Ilulissat still remains slated for autumn 2024 - but the date may slide into 2025..
Adding to the uncertainties, the company managing Greenland's airports, KAIR, has lost one of its three top-execs as Aviaaja Karlshoj Knudsen has stepped down from her position as Exec Project Director with immediate effect.
