Jan 03, 2024 (newstodate): Denmark's Billund Airport barely managed to keep its full-year 2023 cargo volumes on a par with the preceding year.
A total of 76,363 tonnes of cargo was thus handled in January-December 2023, which was still down 0.7 percent, y-o-y.
Volumes in 2022 were however also down 0.4 percent, y-o-y, leaving 2021 with the record so far at 77,150 tonnes after rising 14.9 percent, y-o-y.
The trend is however positive at Billund Airport that saw volumes in December '23 up by 24.7 percent, y-o-y, to 7,197 tonnes including an increase by 20.9 percent in imports to 1,454 tonnes and a hike by 25.7 percent in exports, to 5,743 tonnes.
Driving the growth in cargo at Billund Airport is clearly Maersk Air Cargo that has added a third Boeing 767 freighter to its base now operating six weekly flights to Hangzhou in China, alongside a fourth aircraft serving the ad-hoc market.
The entry by Maersk Air Cargo has also lifted the proportion of flown cargo vs. trucked cargo above 50 percent since September '23.
In 2020, flown cargo accounted for 39 percent of all cargo handled at Billund Airport, and only 30 percent in 2019.
