Jan 02, 2024 (newstodate): 2024 will be a challenging year for Icelandair Cargo.
Shortly before Christmas, the carrier redelivered its second-last Boeing 757-200F freighter to the lessor, leaving the last unit on the bench till its planned phase-out later this year.
In the freighter fleet will thus be only two Boeing 767-300BCF aircraft, of which one is to seek a future in the ACMI market.
Steering Icelandair Cargo from November 2023 in its diminished role is Einar Mar Gudmundsson after having served as an interim solution since September 14, 2023, when Gunnar Mar Sigurfinnsson stepped down after more than 15 years as Finnair Cargo Managing Director.
According to the Icelandair Group's Q3/2023 report, the cargo operation has been "very challenging" in 2023 due to difficult market conditions at the same time as Icelandair has invested in more capacity.
And in its latest earnings forecast, the Icelandair Group deplored the unsatisfactory performance of its cargo arm, stressing the need for a new approach to face industry challenges.
