Sep 21, 2023 (newstodate): Earlier this month, the mayor of the commune housing Qaqortoq Airport aired the hope for seeing the runway extended to 1,799 m instead of as now 1,499 m.
As the background for the vision, the mayor cited a growing need for air traffic between Denmark and southern Greenland after the redirection of Transatlantic flights away from Kangerlussuaq that has so far served this purpose.
And the idea of a longer runway at Qaqortoq Airport has not been shot down in the first phase.
According to Kalaallit Airports, the runway extension is technically feasible while requiring a wide range of technical issues to be solved and verified.
Air Greenland has also confirmed that Transatlantic flights at Qaqortoq Airport would be technically feasible with an extended runway.
If carried through, a project for extending the runway to 1,799 m will require a full scrutiny and approval process by the Danish Transport, Building and Housing Authority.
