During the first eight months of this year, the airport handled a total of 181,555 tonnes of cargo, which was down by 9.5 percent, y-o-y, but indicating a recovery against the snag in H1/23 by 15.1 percent, y-o-y.
For legacy traffic alone, totals in Jan-Aug '23 comprised 122,874 tonnes of belly cargo, up 71.6 percent, reflecting the sustained growth in cargo on passenger aircraft as pax networks expand.
Trucked cargo volumes by legacy carriers were down by 6.3 percent to 57,375 tonnes, showing a turn from trucking to flown volumes.
Still low compared to pre-Covid years, the airport's volumes by freighter traffic, excluding integrators, did reach 1,150 tonnes, a positive sign seen against only 105 tonnes during the full year 2022.
Boosting legacy carriers' freighter volumes was the introduction on March 12, 2023, of Ethiopian Airlines Cargo's weekly freighter service flying in from the carrier's main European hub at Liege and continuing directly to Addis Abeba.
Also during June 2023, Lufthansa Cargo operated a weekly trial service with an A321F between Frankfurt and Copenhagen; a service that may return in some form from October 2023 as signals indicate..
