Sep 07, 2023 (newstodate): Sweden's Stockholm Airport has still to overcome the negative effects from Finnair's retreat of North Atlantic flights in November 2022.
Finnair launched flights to destinations in the USA and to Thailand in October 2021 but stopped again from winter 2022/23, closing its hub at Stockholm Arlanda Airport to allocate instead its capacity in the strategic cooperation with Qatar Airways taking effect from November 2022,
In the first eight months of this year, the airport is thus seeing its total cargo volumes down by 14.7 percent, y-o-y, to 58,290 tonnes.
With 35,030 tonnes exports weighed the most but dropped 14.6 percent, and totaling 23,259 tonnes, import volumes were also down by 15 percent during January-August 2023.
However, taking a long-term view Swedavia is adamant to bolster its position in air cargo, not least at Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
In April 2023 Swedavia thus launched plans for establishing a Cargo City adjacent to the country's capital Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
For a start, Swedavia has dedicated an area spanning 144,400 m2 to the purpose, opening up for construction of facilities to serving air cargo and logistics providers with ample space for handling and office purposes within a secured area.
Swedavia's Real Estate company is now scanning the market for investors and contractors to join the project on long-term contracts in the form of JVs.
