Sep 18, 2023 (newstodate): Denmark's Billund Airport has high ambitions for growing its role in the air cargo business.
Billund Airport rounded off 2022 with all-year cargo volumes almost unchanged against the preceding year, down 0.4 percent, y-o-y.
A total of 76,874 tonnes of cargo was handled at the airport, with exports the key driver in cargo with volumes increasing by 0.5 percent to 58,594 tonnes in 2023, while imports dipped 3.1 percent to 18,280 tonnes.
However, the flow of cargo at Billund is still heavily dominated by trucked cargo to and from other European airport, constituting some 70 percent of the total cargo volumes.
Still, the airport has ambitions to grow volumes to as high as 160,000 tonnes by 2040 and is planning for construction of a Cargo City aiming at securing Billund a position as a new European cargo hub.
Today, the airport is pinning its hopes on a continued expansion of Maersk Air Cargo's traffic launched on March 20, 2023, and since January 3, 2022, the Icelandic cargo carrier Bluebird Nordic is online with flights coming in from Keflavik to Billund, continuing to Bonn/Cologne Airport and returning along the same route in a cooperation with UPS.
Turkish Airlines Cargo is online at Billund Airport with three weekly operations, and hopes are to see the coming new Faroese airline FarCargo opening flights from Billund to Vagar Airport later this autumn.
