Sep 18, 2023 (newstodate): airBaltic is happy with the performance at its Finnish base, Tampere Airport.
As the first base outside its home turf, the Baltic markets, airBaltic opened the base on May 2, 2022, allocating one Airbus A220-300 and serving Tampere also with one Riga-based aircraft, facilitating the operation of flights to European destinations including Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Munich, Riga, as well as leisure destinations Malaga and Rhodes.
This coming winter, airBaltic is to open its second base outside the Baltic region in winter 2023/24 - albeit as a seasonal operation only.
The carrier is to allocate two of its currently 44 Airbus A220-300 aircraft at Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, to provide flights to destinations in the Nordic and Baltic markets.
But the airline is to spread its wings further with new bases outside the Baltic region:
-We will open new bases, while a final decision has not been made yet. Suffice it to say that it may be anywhere between the Mediterranean and the North Pole, said Martin Gauss, airBaltic CEO, on the sideline of last week's Riga Aviation Forum.
