Aug 10, 2023 (newstodate): USA has further expanded its list of sanctions imposed on Belarus.
Already in 2022, The US Department of Commerce targeted the Belarus carrier Belavia with sanctions to comprise seven Boeing 737 aircraft operated by Belavia that were now excluded from refueling, maintenance, repair or spare parts or service by any party or company.
In practice, the sanction excluded Belavia from operating these aircraft on any international flight, and at the same time the fate of an order by Belavia for a further Boeing 737 aircraft became highly doubtful.
In a fresh move, USA has now again expanded the sanctions list for Belarus, adding several organizations including the Minsk Civil Aviation Plant and Belavia - and detailing a full ban on one aircraft operated by Belavia, used for the needs of "high-ranking members of the government (president) Alexander Lukashenko, as well as members of their families."
Among the aircraft in Belavia's fleet are three E195 and two E175 aircraft leased from the Danish lessor Nordic Aviation Capital under a contract signed in November 2018, as well as two more aircraft on earlier lease contracts.
After the forced detour to Belarus of a Ryanair aircraft on an intra-EU flight from Athens to Vilnius on May 23, 2021, the international response has been a range of economic and political sanctions on Belarus, including flight bans by a number of EU and non-EU countries.
