Aug 25, 2023 (newstodate): While Thai Airways has long since resumed post-Covid services to Denmark and Sweden, the carrier remains offline in the Norwegian market.
And according to Norwegian media, there is no sign that Thai Airways is to put flights to Oslo back on its route network in the coming winter schedule either.
The carrier actually obtained slots for three weekly operations at Oslo Airport in winter '23, but has now retreated from its plans, handing back the slots.
Thai Airways first launched flights from Bangkok to Oslo on June 15, 2009, offering five weekly flights that are also of great importance to Norway's seafood exporters.
As the Covid-19 pandemic deepened, Thai Airways suspended all Scandinavian services from April 1, 2020, returning flights to Copenhagen again from Bangkok to Copenhagen Airport since July 17, 2020, and to Stockholm from October 2021.
In Norway, hopes were to see Thai Airways returning already in 2022 - but this did not happen; the airline's office remained closed and staff was laid off.
Compensating for the loss of Thai Airways' flights, Norse Atlantic Airways in May 2023 revealed its plans to launch services from Oslo to Bangkok from this autumn.
Norse is thus to start out on its first Asian route from Oslo to Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport starting from November 2, 2023, with two weekly rotations with Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
Encouraged by a strong immediate response in the Norwegian market, Norse Atlantic Airways later decided to add even a third weekly rotation during the Christmas and New Year seasons, as well as around Easter 2024.
The coming new flights between Oslo and Bangkok will launch only few days after SAS' launch of flights from Copenhagen to Bangkok starting from October 31, 2023, offering three weekly rotations with Airbus A350 aircraft.
