Aug 15, 2023 (newstodate): Hurricane "Hans" took a heavy toll on parts of southern and western Norway from August 7, 2023, and posed challenges also for the country's crucial exports of seafood.
The bulk of Norwegian seafood is sourced in the country's western and northern regions, from where shipments are trucked into Oslo for onward uplift from Oslo Airport.
A survey among some of the stakeholders in the Norwegian seafood industry shows, however, that the industry managed to overcome most of the difficulties.
-While many local and regional roads are still closed or difficult to pass, the north-south highways are less affected and fully passable again since before the last weekend, says Lars Tomte, MOWI Air Cargo Manager.
-With all due respect for the disaster and its effects, as of now the situation is back to normal for our part, with little impact from the natural disasters on the trucking into Oslo. We basically managed to keep the flow of shipments up to normal levels, says Mr Tomte.
At Gardermoen Perishables Center, Oslo Airport, operations were also little affected.
-We have not seen major direct consequences of the hurricane and the flooding. Our operations have been running basically as normal, and we have also not heard about major difficulties from our exporters and forwarders, says Torgil Staalberg, GPC Mng Dir.
