Aug 15, 2023 (newstodate): Greenland will see the opening of new international airports at Nuuk and Ilulissat by the end of 2024, and a new airport is under construction at Qaqortoq with a 1,499 m runway allowing for fixed-wing operations and poised for opening by fall 2025.
Ambitions do not stop there, however; Kalaallit, the state-owned airports company, has now been mandated and granted means to analyze the potentials in constructing also two new airports at Ittoqqortoormiit and Tasiilaq, on Greenland's east coast, currently served by helicopters only.
In 2015, projects for the two airports aimed at construction of airports with runways at 650 and 1,199 m, but these ambitions may be scaled down to short asphalted runways only.
The analysis of the viability of the two airports will be completed before the end of this year, with its findings to be presented to the government for a final decision, notably considering the financial issues at stake.
