Aug 17, 2023 (newstodate): The opening of new Transatlantic airports in Greenland by the end of 2024 provides a basis for enhancing the country's air connectivity with new international routes.
In 2021, Greenland's airport company Kalaallit Airports contracted the UK consulting firm ASM, Aviation Services Management, to boost the process and explore the future opportunities.
Under a three-year contract, ASM is assisting in developing a strategy for a future route network and ways to promote the new options to foreign airlines with a view to seek flights between Greenland, North America, Europe beyond Scandinavia, and eventually Asian markets.
Kalaallit Airports is reportedly seeing a strong interest in the opening of new potentials for foreign airlines to launch flights to the coming new airports; according to Greenlandic media, talks have thus far been conducted with 27 airlines.
Today, Air Greenland is alone in providing air connectivity including domestic routes as well as the daily trunk route connecting Kangerlussuaq and Copenhagen Airport, served by the carrier's sole Airbus A330-800 aircraft.
