Aug 21, 2023 (newstodate): The Faeroese carrier Atlantic Airways will lift off on its first scheduled flight to New York tomorrow, August 22, 2023.
The original flight schedule comprised one weekly rotation with Airbus A320neo aircraft till October 4, 2023, but instead the schedule will comprise only five rotations, with the last operation on September 20.
-Bookings on the new route were opened rather late, only starting from May '23, and this has probably dampened the response in the market. Also, we are now working hard to attain an enhanced representation on the US booking channels, says Johanna a Berghi, Atlantic Airways CEO.
-Anyhow, we remain highly optimistic about the prospects for this route between the USA and the Faroe Islands and plan for a resumption of the service again from Autumn 2024.
In 2023, Atlantic Airways offers flights to 11 destinations and is determined to grow organically with the demand in the market.
Originally, hopes were to start services from Vagar Airport to New York already from September 2019 including a series of 4-6 rotations with Airbus A320neo aircraft pending full authorizations by the government bodies involved.
This did not materialize, however, due to late delivery of the first Airbus A320neo, but Atlantic Airways also did not get the Foreign Carrier Permit to introduce the flights in time.
Later, hopes were to start flights to the USA at least before Christmas 2019 - but the DOT approvals did not arrive until December 2019 - and revised plans for a start of the US flights in 2020 were soon overtaken by the Covid-10 pandemic that brought all flight operations to a stand-still.
