Jul 24, 2023 (newstodate): Always bursting with enthusiasm, Denmark's Billund Airport is nevertheless seeing a sustained decline in cargo volumes in the first half of 2023.
A total of 35,722 tonnes of cargo was thus handled at the airport in January-June 2023, a drop by 11.4 percent, y-o-y, with imports down by 15.6 percent and exports also declining by 10 percent.
June brought some consolation with a modest growth by 1.8 percent in total volumes to 6,548 tonnes, thanks to an increase by 2.4 percent in exports, while imports were still down by 0.3 percent.
The cargo statistics thus bear little, or no, evidence of the supposedly strong impact on the airport's cargo business by the opening of Maersk Air Cargo's base at Billund Airport with Billund-Hangzhou-Billund operations since March 20, 2023, that grew from three to five weekly rotations in May as the company added the second Boeing 767-300ERF freighter to its base at the airport.
Anyhow, the CEO of Billund Airport, Jan Hessellund remains jubilant in his comments to the monthly cargo statistics:
-The activity in Cargo Center Billund is rising again, and to our intense joy Maersk Air Cargo is seeing success with its route between Billund and China, writes Mr Hressellund.
