Jul 26, 2023 (newstodate): Denmark's Billund Airport is keen to grow its air cargo business.
Hot on the heels of the Maersk Group's launch of Maersk Air Cargo with a European hub at Billund was the announcement of a mega project aiming at securing Billund a position as a new European cargo hub by 2040.
The project will be backed by investments from Denmark's largest pension fund, PensionDenmark, and the two parties will set up a joint company to drive the development of the Billund Airport City towards 2040, aiming at seeing cargo volumes rising from today's 77,000 to 160,000 tonnes annually.
The Airport City will seek to attract leading logistics companies and airlines to Billund Airport that will establish office facilities, warehouses and hangars to serve the coming new clients on a 700 ha plot at the airport premises.
However, Billund Airport will have to find a new Director/COO Ground Handling as the holder of the position since June 2019 - and with 20 years in various positions at Billund Airport, Rene Hogh Jensen abruptly announced his immediate resignation by the start of this month.
-I have entered into a severance agreement with the airport due to the fact that we have not had quite the same view on the way to continue a commercially strong and competitive Ground Handling of the airport. We agreed on the strategy and direction, but unfortunately we differed on the way to the goal, said Mr Jensen in a twitter post.
Also in June, Billund Airport noted the resignation of another key figure in the airport's development of a role in the air cargo business, as Tonny Hansen, with the airport since 2007, announced his resignation as Manager Air Cargo Ground Handling.
