Jun 02, 2023 (newstodate): A rebound in passenger traffic and expectations of further growth in operations at the Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport requires expansion of the infrastructure.
High on the "to-do list" is the need for more aircraft parking stands; today, the airport has five parking stands, but only three are actually available for larger aircraft.
After a tender process, Vagar Airport has now contracted the Faroese company J&K Petersen for construction of a new parking stand, including all pertinent equipment and infrastructure.
Construction works will start immediately after all required permits and approvals have been obtained.
The coming new platform will also be needed for serving the Faroese cargo carrier under formation, FarCargo that expects to take delivery of its first Boeing 757-200 converted freighter by August this year, according to the latest update.
FarCargo will fly Faroese salmon exports from Bakkafrost to New York Newark Airport, returning from the USA most probably via Denmark's Billund Airport with US exports, and next taking Faroese import shipments back to Vagar Airport.
When delivered, the aircraft with Danish registration will be placed on the AOC of and operated by West Atlantic Sweden, partnering with FarCargo till the airline obtains an own AOC at a later stage.
Originally, expectations were that the first flight would launch already by late October/early November 2022 - but plans were delayed as FarCargo rejected the acquisition of the Boeing 757-200 first sourced.
