Jun 16, 2023 (newstodate): Notwithstanding the current ban on Russian flights in EU and European airspace, plans are being prepared for charter flights from Russia to Svalbard later this year.
The flights are aiming to launch in August, set up by the Russian state-owned coal mining company Arktikugol that has been operating for more than 90 years on the island of Spitsbergen in Svalbard, Norway.
The Svalbard Treaty of 1920 established Norway's sovereignty over this territory, which was previously considered no man's land, and the countries that are parties to the treaty, including Russia, were given an equal right to exploit the resources of Svalbard and its territorial waters.
Any flights from Russia to Svalbard will require an en-route stop at a Norwegian airport, and the Russian company claims that negotiations are underway.
