Jun 20, 2023 (newstodate): Serving the Research Triangle Region of North Carolina, USA, Icelandair opened flights from May 12, 2022, from Keflavik Airport to Raleigh-Durham Airport.
The route was initially set up as a seasonal service with four weekly rotations using Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft until October 2022 - but already in September '22 Icelandair announced that the route will be operated year-round, albeit with a reduced schedule during the winter schedule but reflecting the positive response in the market for the new route.
Icelandair is convinced of the potentials in this route, now planning for an increase to six weekly rotations during summer 2024.
This is part of a general increase in the airline's key North American route network, with flights to Detroit, launched only on May 28, 2023, with four weekly rotations set to grow to six weekly rotations in S'24; flights to New York JFK will go from 17 to 21 weekly flights, and on flights to New York Newark Airport Icelandair will replace the Boeing 757-300 with larger Boeing 767-300 aircraft.
