Jun 28, 2023 (newstodate): June 15, 2023, saw the inaugural flight at Romania's new airport at Brasov-Ghimbav International Airport - the first airport to be built in post-Soviet Romania, and the 17th commercial airport in the country.
Dan Air is today the only airline operating at the airport, but the start of operations has not been without troubles.
On June 26, Dan Air actually threatened to pull out from Brasov Airport again after operations were limited to the time frame 07.00-19.00.
Dan Air has now decided to stay at Brasov Airport, while rerouting all its operations outside this time frame to Bucharest Airport.
One hurdle remains, though: the lack of aircraft maintenance services at Brasov Airport, with negotiations still pending.
Brasov-Ghimbav Airport is first in Romania to have a virtual control tower provided by the Swedish company Saab, and all take-off and landing operations at the airport are now coordinated in real-time from the Flight Control Center in Arad, close to the border with Hungary.
Brasov-Ghimbav International Airport has one 2,800 m runway allowing for operations by medium-sized aircraft including Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.
