Jun 16, 2023 (newstodate): June 15, 2023, saw the inaugural flight at Romania's new airport at Brasov-Ghimbav International Airport.
The airport is the first airport to be built in post-Soviet Romania, and the 17th commercial airport in the country.
The opening flight was performed by Tarom from Bucharest Otopeni Airport, and shortly after Dan Air landed also from Bucharest to prepare for the first scheduled flight from Brasov to Stuttgart, to be followed by more routes by Dan Air to Germany.
Starting from August, Wizz Air will also launch regular flights between Brasov and London and Dortmund as its first moves.
Brasov-Ghimbav Airport has become the first in the country to have a virtual control tower provided by the Swedish company Saab, and all take-off and landing operations at the airport are now coordinated in real-time by specialists from the Flight Control Center in Arad, close to the border with Hungary.
Besides being the country's first airport to implement a virtual ATC system, Brasov-Ghimbav Airport has also become the world's second airport, after London City Airport, to bypass the initial stage of conventional ATC by going directly to remote ATC technology.
Brasov-Ghimbav International Airport has one 2,800 m runway allowing for operations by medium-sized aircraft including Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.
