Jun 29, 2023 (newstodate): Norway is not to allow Russian charter flights to Svalbard this summer.
The Russian state-owned coal mining company Arktikugol was planning to set up charter flights to Spitsbergen on Svalbard in August, but Norway has denied access to its airspace for Russian airlines, referring to the existing ban on air traffic after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
The Svalbard Treaty of 1920 established Norway's sovereignty over this territory, which was previously considered no man's land, and the countries that are parties to the treaty, including Russia, were given an equal right to exploit the resources of Svalbard and its territorial waters.
Any flights from Russia to Svalbard will require an en-route stop at a Norwegian airport, but this will not be granted under the prevailing circumstances.
