Jun 13, 2023 (newstodate): Opened in 1936, the future of the Swedish airport at Bromma, near Stockholm's city center, has long been a hot political issue.
The existing contract between Swedavia and Stockholm City expires in 2038, and politicians differ on whether the airport should be shut down even prior to the expiry date.
Now the Swedish airline BRA is calling attention to a conference on June 14, 2023, presenting a new vision for the airport after 2038.
According to a teaser, BRA sees potentials in turning Bromma Airport into a hub for Advanced Air Mobility, comprising electric flight operations, cargo drones and electrically-driven helicopter flights.
After the world war, the predecessors of SAS operated European flights at Bromma Airport; but the jet age called for longer runways and a more extensive airport infrastructure, leading to the construction of Stockholm Arlanda Airport and the move of international air traffic away from Bromma Airport.
Despite the dwindling importance of Stockholm Bromma Airport, it still serves airlines including BRA, Brussels Airlines, Finnair and Nyxair operating turboprop aircraft.
