Jun 23, 2023 (newstodate): With a 2,400 m runway, Akureyri Airport has a role to play in Iceland's airports infrastructure.
The airport is not only as a domestic airport, but also as an alternative for Keflavik Airport under adverse weather conditions and abnormal situations, such as during the volcano burst in 2010 that forced traffic away from Keflavik to Akureyri.
Besides, new airlines are bringing traffic into the airport, with easyJet as the latest newcomer from end of October 2023.
A new and expanded passenger terminal is thus needed for handling of larger passenger flows, and construction of the first phase was started by the end of March 2023.
More traffic also increases the pressure on the airport infrastructure, including aircraft parking stands set to increase from today's five to eight after the completion of the ongoing construction of a new apron, slated for commissioning by late autumn this year.
