Jun 23, 2023 (newstodate): Denmark's Aalborg Airport, in the north of the country's Jutland peninsula, is seeking a role in the air cargo industry.
Already in 2021, the airport decided on a strategy for air cargo as a complement to continuous development of its passenger route network.
-We will focus on the role of Aalborg and Aalborg Airport as a hub for traffic between Denmark of the North Atlantic region including Greenland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands, Niels Hemmingsen, Aalborg Airport CEO, told newstodate in July '21.
Aalborg Airport is now eyeing the opening of the air cargo niche as the Icelandic LCC PLAY has launched flights between Keflavik and Aalborg from June 10, 2023, with one weekly rotation for a start, and connecting via Iceland to its North American route network.
Now, the Faroese seafood exporter Bakkafrost is to launch scheduled freighter flights from Vagar Airport to the USDA, and retiring via a Danish airport to the Faroe Islands with import goods.
Will that be a business case for Aalborg Airport?
-Right now we are focusing on opening the seafood traffic in the form of belly cargo on PLAY's passenger aircraft. Besides that, we are focusing also on seeking a role in the e-commerce traffic, so we are not in a position to build up a business case for freighter cargo at this early stage, says Niels Hemmingsen, Aalborg Airport CEO.
