Jun 02, 2023 (newstodate): Despite an increase in freighter traffic, Denmark's Billund Airport still saw total cargo volumes down in May 2023.
A total of 6,145 tonnes of cargo was handled, which was down 6.2 percent, y-o-y.
Totals included 1,450 tonnes of imports, down 4.5 percent, and 4,695 tonnes of exports, also down 6.7 percent, y-o-y.
During the first five months of 2023, the airport is thus down 13.9 percent, y-o-y, in total volumes, with imports down 18.3 percent, and exports also down 12.4 percent, y-o-y.
Volumes handled at Billund Airport are thus reflecting the general negative growth in the global air cargo industry.
However, the airport's cargo business is bolstered by the volumes generated by Maersk Air Cargo's Billund-Hangzhou operations since March 20, 2023, that grew from three to five weekly rotations in May as the company added the second Boeing 767-300ERF freighter to its base at the airport.
Also serving Billund Airport since January 3, 2022, the Icelandic cargo carrier Bluebird Nordic is online with flights coming in from Keflavik to Billund, continuing to Bonn/Cologne Airport and returning along the same route in a cooperation with UPS that has long been serving the route between Billund and Cologne with an ATP aircraft operated by West Atlantic.
