Jun 30, 2023 (newstodate): Uncertainty shrouds the future of the world's largest twin-deck, wide-body Airbus A380 - but the aircraft still finds new venues of survival..
Lately, Global Airlines has entered into an agreement to acquire a further three Airbus A380 adding to its currently single A380, with start of operations slated for Spring 2024.
A British startup airline planning to start operations from London to New York City and Los Angeles in spring 2024, Global Airlines purchased its first aircraft in May 2023, and claims to be the first new Airbus A380 owner in eight years.
This is a second attempt by a carrier to bring used Airbus A380 aircraft back in the air: the Portuguese aircraft leasing and ACMI company HiFly placed an order for the ex-Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 aircraft in September 2017, and took delivery of the aircraft in July 2018.
HiFly thus became the 4th European airline and the 14th global operator to fly this aircraft type.
However, the drop in aviation caused by the corona pandemic made the operations unsustainable, and HiSky performed its last Airbus A380 flight in December 2020.
In December 2021, Emirates took delivery of the last Airbus A380 aircraft, which finally closed the production line after 251 units were delivered.
