Jun 14, 2023 (newstodate): The Latvian airBaltic is to open its second base outside the Baltic region in winter 2023/24 - albeit as a seasonal operation only.
The carrier is to allocated two of its currently 42 Airbus A220-300 aircraft at Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, to provide flights to destinations in the Nordic markets.
First to come are three weekly flights to Riga from October 23, 2023, followed by the opening from December 1, 2023, of flights to Copenhagen, Billund and Aalborg in Denmark; flights to Norway will include destinations Oslo Gardermoen Airport and Sandefjord Torp Airport as well as Bergen; in Sweden flights will launch to Tampere, and flights will start also to Vilnius in Lithuania and Tallinn in Estonia.
The opening of the winter base at Gran Canary with a total of 17 weekly rotations on the 10 routes will have no impact on airBaltic's winter schedule, plans and overall operations from Riga, Tallinn, Vilnius, and Tampere.
The seasonal offer compliments airBaltic's current services to the Canary Islands, as the airline will continue to operate direct flights to Tenerife from its four main bases during the upcoming winter season.
Early in May 2022, airBaltic launched its first base outside the Baltic region at Tampere, in Finland, allocating one Airbus A220-300 aircraft to build up a network of connections to Oslo, Copenhagen, Frankfurt and Munich as well as to Malaga and Rhodes.
