Jun 27, 2022 (newstodate): Who needs 22 Russian-built Superjet 100 aircraft?
In January 2011, Interjet signed a contract for the purchase of 10 Superjet 100 aircraft plus options for another five, and activated the five options in May 2012, bringing the firm orders to 20, and later adding two more aircraft in November 2012.
But - in December 2019 the carrier ended all operations with the Superjet 100, deciding instead build its future on Airbus aircraft, and actually the Superjet fleet had long been stuck on the ground due to lack of maintenance, spares, components and technical support from Sukhoi.
Now the manufacturer of the aircraft, Sukhoi, has given up hope of ever retrieving the stranded aircraft that have long since lost their airworthiness certificates.
Instead, the aircraft will probably be auctioned off, ending their lives as scrap metal.
