May 19, 2023 (newstodate): A fresh attempt will be made to provide direct scheduled services connecting Sweden and Lebanon.
With the first flight on September 6, 2023, Eurowings will offer a weekly rotation on the route with Airbus A320 aircraft, intending to add a second rotation from October 8, 2023.
Over the years, several attempts have been made to set up scheduled services between Lebanon and Sweden, catering to the large Lebanese diaspora in Scandinavia.
Starting from July 2016, the German carrier Germania launched flights on the route between Stockholm and Beirut, initially offering two weekly rotations on the route with Airbus A319 aircraft.
Earlier, the Swedish carrier Viking Airlines launched scheduled direct flights from Stockholm Arlanda to Beirut from March 16, 2006, but repercussions among Muslims over the publication of certain caricature drawings forced the carrier to suspend the opening of the route, and the carrier was later declared bankrupt in February 2011.
The Swedish carrier Nordic Aviation also introduced flights from Stockholm to Beirut from June 2009, but these were only operated on an ad-hoc basis and soon suspended.
SAS tested the destination through its former low-cost adventure Snowflake from 2003, but these flights were again suspended from the start of the winter schedule 2005/2006.
Starting from December 11, 2020, the German carrier Sundair offered flights to Beirut with one weekly rotation using Airbus A320 aircraft.
And in 2021, a project named Northern Airlines planned to launch services from Stockholm Airport to Beirut and Malaga as the carrier's first destinations - but failed even to obtain its AOC.
