May 26, 2023 (newstodate): Sanctions or not: prospect EU member country Georgia's Georgian Airways is pursuing a potentially golden revenue stream from Russia-Europe traffic via its hub at Tbilisi Airport.
Despite vehement protests from many parts of the Georgian society, including the Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili who has announced a boycott of Georgian Airways, the carrier returned flights earlier in May from Tbilisi to Moscow Vnukovo Airport.
According to Russian media, Georgian Airways has announced plans to resume transfer flights between Europe and Russia. With direct flights now banned due to sanctions, the carrier hopes to tap into the market where demands are exceeding supply.
Today, passengers between Russia and Europe are forced to transfer at non-EU destinations such as Istanbul, Belgrade or Dubai.
Georgian Airways now plans to expand its European operations with launching flights to Prague and Rome on May 27, 2023, to be followed by flights to Thessaloniki and Larnaca in June.
Georgian Airways is already operating flights on routes to four other destinations within the EU – Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, and Vienna.
So, sanctions and EU membership or not: money talks....
