May 24, 2023 (newstodate): Slovenia has been without a national carrier since the bankruptcy of Adria Airways on October 1, 2019, and is in dire need for connectivity.
Since then, many abortive plans have surfaced for establishing a new national carrier, including envisaging already in December 2019 the set-up of a new airline tentatively named Air Slovenia, optimistically hoped to perform its first flight already in February 2020, eventually to be equipped with a fleet of 12 aircraft on a route network comprising 15 destinations in Europe.
In February 2021, other reports were that a new airline was under formation in Slovenia, to be named SouthEast Airlines and operating a fleet of Airbus A320 aircraft expecting to grow from initially one to two aircraft before the end of the year with a lift-off on its first commercial flight in June 2021.
Now, another scheme maybe founded on firmer soil is emerging after an expert commission this month presented its findings on the economic impacts of Adria Airways’ 2019 bankruptcy.
The country's PM will now receive a recommendation to start the process for setting up a new national carrier, which is expected to require a full year's preparation.
Pending a positive handling and approval of the pertinent issues by the EU Commission, the Slovenian state would be willing to co-finance the project for an initial seven years' period.
