May 19, 2023 (newstodate): The Russian invasion of Ukraine and the ensuing closure of Russian airspace has left a deep mark also on the cargo performance by Latvia's Riga Airport in 2023.
A total of 7,948 tonnes of cargo was handled at Riga Airport - a drop by 22 percent compared to 2022.
The decline is prompted primarily by a fall in volumes on all-cargo operations that generated 3,106 tonnes in Jan-Apr '23 compared to 4,770 tonnes in 2022 - a steep drop by 35 percent, y-o-y.
Until the outbreak of the war in February '22, Riga Airport was building up a growing freighter traffic, bringing in Chinese e-commodities for distribution in the region.
As for cargo on passenger aircraft, volumes were more stable compared to last year; a total of 3,078 tonnes of belly cargo was handled, only three percent below last year's volumes.
